Sorry, but I just have to comment concerning the article you mentioned. On the very first page of the article is says that the C4 PKE system can be switched from passive to manual mode and that when in the manual mode the system allows you to "unlock the doors as you would with any other key fob."
That information is WRONG, the PKE system in our cars will NOT function in manual mode.
Believe the balance of the article at your own risk, something tells me the writer failed to do his research.
I did not read the article mentioned, but the above info is correct.
The button on the FOB will NEVER lock or unlock the drivers door.
It can be configured to unlock the passenger door, but will not lock it.
The fob does not transmit a signal to lock the car, it is constantly transmiting a signal to not lock the car.
OK, I didn't really say that right. When moving, the fob is always transmitting a signal, kind of like a "I'm in range" signal. When the system is "turned on", the receiver searches for that signal and takes appropriate actions. (Signal disappears and doors are unlocked, then lock doors. Signal appears and doors are locked, then unlock doors. etc.)
I was having weird issues with my PKE. It would randomly cycle the locks and on more than one occasion it would pop the rear glass while going down the road.
It seemed to operate properly on occasion and seemed to program properly. just random stuff happening.
I finally disabled the thing until I got a new PKE module. It has worked perfectly ever since.
