I have a 96 LT-4 with 38,000 miles on it and I went out after work yesterday and it would not start. It just kept cranking but it wouldnt start. The battery was fine and I've had the opti replaced. Anyone have any similar experiences or ideas? :(
I have had two instances of this in my 92. Both times the answer was to remove the key clean it real well, insert a Q-tip in the ignition and twist it to clean off the contacts. Hope this will help you.
If it is cranking but not starting I don't think that it is the alarm. In my case was the fuel pump. Did you check if there is any fuel pressure? Did you check the fuses?
Good Luck
Doubt it's fuel related on a '96, it could be like what happened to my '95.
Everybody said change the fuel filter and fuel pump. But I was smelling gasoline, so I knew the pump and filter were fine.
My problem was ignition related and sounds similar to what you're having.
The ignition wire from the coil was rubbing against the water pump. It finally wore through so it was grounding out.
Check that before you start blindly throwing parts at it.
First, it isn't VATS.. the starter wouldn't even turn if that was engaged.
It isn't getting either fuel or spark. I'm leaning toward the spark too. Check your coil to opti wire, re-seat it. Check the position sensor on the opti, make sure it is connected and all. Check for codes too.
I guess this is an obvious question, but are you sure you have enough fuel in the tank?
