I might have messed up my damper, not sure. I pried on it a little bit when removing it before I realized it. it doesn't look like I moved anything though, but it its got 100,00 on it and a replacement is cheap enough. What I don't know is how you replace the weight in it, can you buy the weight and just put it in the hole? And is their a difference in dampers, prices seem all over the place, most at just under $100.00...
The harmonic damper..I pulled it to get to the optispark. I've read a thousand posts on this but haven't read one about replacing the old damper with a new one..and replacing the weights that go in it. Seems like you can't buy these weights and you can't get the old ones out..so what can you do...Looks like I'll be better off putting the old one back on and hope for the best..unless someone has a better idea. What I also don't understand is how an aftermarket damper like an ATI or Fluid damper can work without these weights which are specific to each engine...
The front half of the crank is internal balance, so there really is no weights on the damper to balance the engine. If there are any sort of weights, it's just to balance the damper so that it is neutral balance. If it was external balance, then there would be a counterweight to balance the crank.
This applies to a stock 350. If it's a 383, then it could be balanced either way.
There are small holes drilled into it on the outer edge, one is filled with a weight. I understand this was done when vibrations where found after they where built...

Correct. GM referred to them as pins or pin weights. They used to be available from the dealer and you simply pressed the pins into the same holes as those in the old balancer.
