Ok this is my first vette and I just got it a couple of days ago and i am very excited! I think? When I was going thru inspection they we found out the brake lights don't work. The third light comes on, the flashers work, the hazards lights flash and the tail lights come on. The 4 round lights just won't come on when I apply the brakes. I checked and replace one of the bulbs (wow that took a while) and everything was the same, so the bulbs are not blown. Any help would be grateful.
Don't really remember what order it was done in. He just said crank it up and then started telling me...... Right signal, left, flashers, brakes etc but I don't remember the order. why would that matter?
Its the switch at the pedal . $10, 10 minutes. Did mine last week. And 3 years ago. And 3 years before that, I think. First time I wasted a buch of time tracing wires with a volt meter. Now I just change it.

Ya its pry the switch on top of the brake peddle. You can disconnect the proper plug up there and run a jumper wire on the connector and the lights will light if its the switch. good luck
Don't mean to sound too dumb and thanks for the advice, but why does the third brake light work if it is the switch????? Does it work from something else????? Thanks again!!!!
I was thinking brake light switch also. But he said the 3rd brake light was working. I don't have the wireing diagram here but was thinking that all the brake lights were connected off the brake switch then split. The reason I asked about 4 ways is this. They seldom get used. I have seen people use the 4 ways turn them off and the T/S switch gets hung up in nowhere land interrupting the brake light circuit. Just for laughs go out and turn your 4 ways on and off a few times snap it on and off see what happens

There are seperate sets of contacts in the switch that operate the third brake light. The ones for the others always seem to go bad.
Sounds like there may be a problem with the turn/hazard switch.
All brake lights get power from pedal switch, but the 4 rear ones power is directed though the turn/hazard switch, before the light bulbs. On my 86, the second set of contacts on brake switch are for cruise disengage.
I'm just going by the electrical schematic from 86 FSM, I never actually looked.
I dont blame you for not looking. Have to be a contortionist to look. I never actually looked inside the the switch to see the contacts but it is capable of turning on the center stop light without the rears coming on.
