Default AC Conversion

I have an 89 Coupe with an A/C leak. Will I be required to convert to the new type of freon and is this expensive? Has anyone had any experience with this?

Hi mlsins, after fixing the leak, you could go with Freeze 12. It is an R-12 replacement and will work with your existing system. I had to recharge my A/C after replacing the compressor. You still should place your system on a vacuum before recharging to eliminate any excess moisture. It works just as good as the original R-12.

I replaced the compressor on my 88 and changed over to the new stuff. The mistake I made was not changing the expansion valve. It has a tendency to get filled up with junk from the bad compressor. Just make sure you change the drier, the expansion valve, the 'O' rings on the compressor (old r-12 rings will have a problem over time) and then find the conversion chart for how much r-134 to put back in. Also get the R-134 compressor oil and put it in after you change all the old parts.
