Trying to torque the damper bolts on my 92 ..can't figure out a way to stop it from turning. I've tried to get the flywheel cover off but just can't get the little bolt off that up near the starter..and I've given up on that approach..just so much time you can lie on your back in the driveway..well at my age anyway...is there anyway to hold this damn thing?????? Will holding the center bolt be enough..if so what size is it??
If your crank pulley & HD is like mine, it will have holes around the outside rim used for inserting balancing weights when the engine was assembled. I found they are also a good place to hold the pulley by. Get a 3 foot long shaft of wood or metal and put 2 or 3 bolts through it at one end that line up with holes in the pulley. When the bolts go through the shaft and into the pulley holes it's like having a lever attached that you can hold while tightening the pulley bolts.
I don't remember this being that difficult. I'm pretty sure that I just held the center bolt and torqued the three other bolts independently. Also, the rubber is way strong enough to use a strap wrench.
I have taken the damper off several times over the past couple years and its just not been a real issue to get it back on. Good Luck

Yup..thats the plan...
I've removed enough crap on this thing to even think about the starter...
what size is the center bolt? if you remember...all this mixed metric/sae on this car is nuts...
If it is like my 93 you need to remove the starter in order to remove flywheel cover anyway. Then you can get to that let bolt.
Going to try the center bolt..working under that thing is a bitch...some things you try to avoid at a certain age.....have to buy a lift some day...

Hmmm, well whatever. You never metioned anything about needing to take the hub off in the original post, only the harmonic dampener/crank pulley.
You guys make this hard. Ok, those holes for weights. Get a punch that fits and stick it one. Try to turn the damper bolts you are trying to loosen when that punch makes contact with the front crossmember it will hold and you can get the bolts loose. Works quite well for me.
