My console lid was pretty much fragged and I coulda bought a new one but wheres the fun??
As you can see its pretty much had it. After noticing the massively reinforced 1/16" thick plastic latch hole that Chevy thought would hold back maybe a 4 year old, I decided to fix both problems at once.
I took an old scrap of plywood and cut it to go inside the perimeter of the old lid. I copied the screw holes, the latch hole and one for the light from the old plastic piece. Inside the lid needed a little grinding of some of the ribs to lay perfectly flat.
I sanded the plywood and applied two coats of satin black paint. After screwing the plywood to the lid I reattached the assembly to the console.
Very solid and it will take a prybar now to get it opened when its locked. The whole deal took an hour or two excluding paint drying time.
Good Idea, I would have stained the wood with a clear so it would look like a quality wood cover not the plastic one it came with. Can you get it reupholstered also. Maybe you could make this a DIY tech tip.
Thanks Peter. I have the nice padded and embroidered console lid cover already so I didnt recover the OEM top except with what I already had. If I woulda had a nicer piece of plywood I probly woulda stained it. I may yet do that.
