Hi. This has happenned twice now. I start the car and the 2 turn signal lights and the bright light symbol come on and stay on (the turn signal lights aren't blinking - they are just on). The rest of the dash is black - no lights at all - but working properly (mph, tach, etc..).
The first time, a couple weeks ago, I just turned the car off and restarted it and it then went back to normal. So the past couple weeks everything is fine. Then this eve I start it and get the same thing - dash black with only those 3 lights on. So I turn it off, restart it, doesn't fix it. So I just drive it down the road and after about 2 mins it pops back to normal.
What the heck is this? The weird thing is my previous Vette, an 87, did this exact same thing but only once! Surely someone else has seen this if both of my Vettes have done it. Thanks!

Thats a result of a bad ground, and it grounds itself by turning on the bright light and the turn signals. Its a loose connection either in the engine compartment, on the drivers' side (mechanics sometimes loosen it and dont know) or its a bad connection in the dash unit. You can take apart and resolder or send it off for repair.
The rest being black is either because of a different (usually, but i suppose it can be the same) loose connection inside the unit or the 4 bulbs have burnt out. You can remove the plastic bezel, there are 4 silver caps with the bulbs underneath. Part # is Sylvania 882. You CANNOT touch the new bulbs while youre puttin them in, as oils from skin make them burn out sooner.
The ground for the cluster is open circuit and ground current is flowing through the turn signal lamps to ground causing them to stay lit. You will have to look at the two circuit boards and determine if there is a circuit foil problem, connector problem , or an external ground wire that is intermittent. You can handle the 882 lamps by hand, but you should clean them with alcohol afterwards to remove fingerprints.
There is nothing wrong with the 4 dash lights - I actually just replaced them. I am saying that when the 3 lights come on (turn signals & bright indicator) the rest of the dash goes black. When the 3 lights go out the rest of the dash turns back on again.
Those are classic digidash problems caused by a few key solder joints failing. I just got thru dealing with them myself. I suggest going thru the step-by-step instructions at this website:
