I just bought some AT29C256 Flash Proms and my Pocket Programmer will not program them, it gets started and then stops and gives me an Error. What are you guys using to program your 29C256's or what am I doing wrong.
PS I program my regular 27C256 EPROM's all the time so I know the damn thing works with them.
Thanks, I'll try doubling up the Bin, but windows reports the file size as 32K.
I got my chips from JDR Microdevices http://www.jdr.com/
When you get to their site just type in AT29C256 in the search window in the upper left corner and It'll take you right to em. They had them in stock last week so I don't think you sould have any trouble. Digi-key is out of them for some reason, but they are always out of Proms.
Keep us posted on how you do this as I will be doing the same thing in a couple of months. Gotta buy a copy of Tunercat and I should be good to go. I have the PP as well and will be using the AT29C256 chips too. :seeya
Well, so far nothing I do will get these babie programmed. The pocket programmer site has specific info about the Atmel 29C256 chips and problems programming them, although the info is just a bunch of crap about using a notebook machine and tuning off the sleep mode and about not using Windows ME and maybe trying to program from DOS mode. Well I have done all this and tried my desktop unit both in Windows and in DOS and it still will not work. The other option is to get the upgraded software form the PP guys, but they want 20 bucks for the DOS version and I have no garantee that this will work, so unless someone out here in cyber land has Hard Evidence about the Pocket Programmers ability to program AT29C256 chips I'm just gonna keep using my old window style (got plenty of em). I'm down to tuning PE mode with a wide band now anyway so I should not need many more burns done. (have done about 70+ getting closed loop right) Well thats the update.
Monte  :yesnod:
I can't help you right now, but mine are in the mail as we speak. I will await replies to your post. If I can get mine to program, I'll let you in on the secret as soon as I can. Good luck.
I use the AT29C256 with no problem knock on wood. I did read that you can't move the mouse while they are being flashed. Not sure if this maybe something little, but over looked that you are doing. I click on the program button and take my hand off the mouse to insure I don't move it.
The next thing is to check the printer port setting. There are two in the bios. I thin one is EPP, and ECP? This could be effecting. How many chips have you tried? I hear brand new ones can be bad from the start. It's pretty common.
I use the AT29C256's with my Pocket Programmer. There's a trick to it. I have to program with the DOS program, and erase (set everything to FF) with the windows program. I can only program an erased prom.
Well, I'm not sure anymore if the chips are defective or not. I don't have the windows version of Pocket Programmer and I'm not going to upgrade ($50:eek:)to it just for this. Maybe I'll just mail em to you and you can see if they work.
I have had no problems with my Pocket Programmer and the AT29C256 chips. I am using the windoze version on a Micron P166 computer. My Programmer remembers the last chip type that was programmed or downloaded. So when I downloaded my stock chip and attempted burn it into the AT29C256, I got an error. Reselecting the the chip type cured the problem.
I just got done programming with the at29c256 and had no problems. I did read that if you are using a laptop, that you should turn off any power management in CMOS. Read the text file that comes with the programmer. I even program mine in Windows. I found it easy, I don't really know what I am doing, but the chips do program. Good luck....
