Default 1984 Transmission Questions

So the story begins, I have a 1984 Corvette that I bought when I was 16 and it needs a little work to start with. With 3 years and 12k later the car had just rolled over 124k and the transmission goes out. Me and the girlfriend were doing about 65...decided to pass a car..kicked down hit 70 and a loud clunk under the middle hump. Give her a little gas and nothing but a spinning sound. Got off the exit come up and the car would go in first gear until about 3,500rpm and then shift to 2nd. Now by time we got home the car goes in first until it gets hot and then nothing. R is a simply spinning noise, park is a spinning and clunk for a few min thats all the transmission does.
My question is does this sound like something a rebuild would fix? is something shattered inside that will take more?
Next, if im not mistaken it is a 700R4 transmission, is this correct?
Last question...is it hard to pull and reinstall? Ive seen threats by using search that kind of touch on the topic. But am I missing a step by step with pictures by chance? I got a quote of $450 to get a total rebuild if I take it to the shop and then reinstall it myself....or $850 for them to pull build and install. Money is a large factor.
Sorry for the long post but any help will be very helpful.
Thanks Guys, you've helped me 100 times already im sure you'll come threw.

You fried the Reaction planetary carrier gearset in the rear of your 700R4 transmission.

When it goes, you lose all gears.

Your description of what happened to your 84 Vette while driving and end results matches exactly 100 % what happened to my original 1987 Vert 700 R4 transmission.

It will cost $$$ to rebuild your original 84 trans yes.

May be best to pick up another C4 trans,
1987-1/2 & up 700R4's had several major internal improvements over the earlier 7004 transmissions.
Price on them.........?
Anywhere from $50.00 to $750 used I have seen them listed for in the past 1 year.

Deals to be had if you search carefully.
Ebay,
Craigslist,
And Corvette Forum C4 pats for sale,
check each nightly for the next 1 month.

Something should come up that fits your Budget.

I chose to rebuild my original 1987 C4 trans with Auxilary Valve body.
Works perfect after over 10,000 miles of fast driving and racing.

Thank You a bunch, this is almost just the information I was looking for! Now I guess its time to get the ambition to start pullin bolts. I have short turn access to a hoist just cant prolong the project much there. Trying to figure out what all I need to have and how long I need to be there now so I can set something up.
Just not giving up on this ol' 84, I wont let it happen! haha
Thanks
