Last night I installed new spark plugs in my '86 (successfully). This morning, I fired it up and then left for about three minutes. When I came back, the engine had shut itself off. Now the dash will not come on when I turn the ignition and the car will only crank but not turn over. I have checked all of the fuses. Any suggestions on what my problem might be?
Yeah, the ECM has got some sort of wiring issue, or youve got an open circuit somewhere in the system
Start by checking the ground, and then check both terminals on the battery. See what voltage you get from the frame to the positive terminal of the battery.
The starter turns the engine over until it RUNS. You need to do some basic diagnosis. Engines require spark, air, fuel, and compression in order to start and continue to run. Use your timing light to see if you have spark and spark at the right time. Bring a grounded wire near a pulled spark plug boot while someone cranks to see if you have a hot spark, you should see at least a snappy 1/2" spark. Measure the fuel pressure, it should be 35-42 psi and it should hold up for 1/2 hr after the ign is off. Use a noid light on several injectors to see if the injectors are being pulsed during cranking. I doubt you have low compression but last and not least measure compression.
Geussing doesn't work very well and replacing parts ***** nilly is the most expensive and dumbest way to repair anything.
