Default if timing is set too fast will engine shut down?

if i set the timing too fast... will the engine turn off?

i noticed it was set at like 8-10btdc with est wire off and egr leak (in park). it runs fine.

i fixed egr leak, it now starts then turns off.

plug est wire back in and move distributor back 4 degrees or so, and now it runs fine again.

also... what is that hissing sound coming out of my engine block now, is that IAC valve letting air in?

There is a large vacuum leak somewhere.
That is likely the reason why the engine idle quality is so bad & you can't accurate set the base ignition timing jumping allover the place when you are trying to set it.

They clue you gave me was a hissing sound.
That is the tell tale sound of a large vacuum leak.

Check & make sure the power brake booster vacuum line is plugged in.
And the same vacuum line has no cut of breaks in it.

If using the PCV valve, make sure the vacuum line to it is OK also

Get the engine running and use a propane torch to locate the leak. When the propane gas is induced to the vacuum leak it will idle noticibly higher.

ps: it would be best to do this while the torch is unlit

about the PCV valve.... is that required too, like the EGR valve? lol

the break booster line might possibly be it. i noticed that valve that sits into the booster is a little loose... also i noticed, that before I pust the EST wire back in and backed off timing, when I put my foot in break the engine rpm would dip a little. after I played with timing and put est wire back in that problem went away.

thanks again btw.

Fix the large vacuum leak whatever & where ever it may be on your engine - Vette 1st before you attempt to do anything else.

I see you took my advice last night.

You are still around today.

Thank God You listened to me.

Getting run over by any car sucks.

By your own Corvette ?

LOL

That little plastic valve will move a bit it just sits in a rubber grommet is all.

Make sure the booster itself isnt cracked and leaking you do need your egr valve. Keep timing at stock setting too.

As others said spend time looking for vacuum leaks youll get it nailed down.

First of all find the vacuum leak.

Next, you are setting the timing incorrectly for an automatic. You need to block the wheels (block all four to be safe), set the parking brake. Unplug the single brown wire...and put the transmission in DRIVE. Set your timing....don't goose the throttle or you might jump the blocks. Standard setting is 6 degrees, but individual cars may run better using 8-10 degrees.

The intake gaskets shrunk- cracked likely from your Vette sitting for 6 years while you were off in College Chasing women & Drinking Beer.

Replace them with Fel-Pro's #1204, #1205, #1206, #1207.

Exact number gaskets depends upon Heads & Intake on your stroker sbc.

gotcha...

I ordered a gasket kit for the SR a week or two ago, for when I put new injectors in.

What's the difference between that and just leaving it in park?

CHECK for any all open sparks before doing this I did the same trick with Carb cleaner when I heard a bang and car was on fire I lucked out and blew it out with the car still running I was on the Passenger side in the garage by my self I was luck I did not burn down the house. (The wife would been PO).

Make sure it dark real dark start the car up before you try propane or carb cleaner and see if you can see any sparks trust me on this one.

you know that is a good idea... but I didn't do that... I used a long rubber tube and propane bottle with a squeezable handle on it. ...

standback, and squeeze handle lightly

my understanding is dropping it into drive, from park, drops the engine rpm by about 150 - 200 rpms because of the added load. - you set the timing with the engine in drive, /w ebrack on, in an automatic. to get a similar timing on the detonation of the cylinder you have to advance the timing by about a few degrees to get it to set in park w/ no load because (usually) the engine picks up a few 150-200rpms.

*shrugs* in all honesty my engine idles at 600rpm in park or in drive.

Stupid Idea.

Good way to get killed.

Like playing Russian Rollette' with a .44 magnum Revolver & 5 bullets in the chamber.
Watch the other guy load 5 bullets in with 1 empty.
Spin the revolver shut.
Point it at your head & face.
Pull the trigger.

You tell me what the odds are that you could die or not.

Another good way you can kill yourself is jump off a Freeway overpass like in Chicago off of I-55 than runs in & out of the City.

Time it just right & Jump off right in front of a MACK Semi tractor & trailer attached.
Hope the semi driver will stop in time along with all other traffic.

Or you can go to O'hare air port wait for a 747 Jet plane to start its engines.............
Wait for the jumbo jet engines spin up to speed full throttle & jump in front of the fan - air compressor intake just 2 feet away.
See if you get sucked in like a Bird or not.

Stupid is what stupid was.

Just Now Dead.

this too.

- for what it's worth, I have mine on blocks - it lurching forward is a non issue(in theory), and I still do it in park.
