beer?

worst case scenario open up a haynes manual and look at what is suppose to be done .... could just out there and look at bolt sizes and get your wrenchs etc lined up. draining the system might be a pain.. unless of course you already drained it.

Beer?? Ofcourse!! It's the most important thing when you are working on ur vette!!

Haynees? I don't have it other wise it would be easier to look into from searching in the furom, by the way I read in one thread what the manuel says about this: take the system apart, remove the evaporator, replace the new one, put the system back again together!!! Doesn't seem too much of help at all right??

Not much more to say.
The whole A/c housing needs to be removed from the firewall in one piece, then it can be split apart to R/R evap core.Obviously anything in the way of housing removal will have to be relocated 1st.
There are fixings all around the perimeter of housings; some are bolts ; the others are studs

... if it makes you feel better I looked in my '91's field service manual for you, and that was the conclusion I came too. your gonna need beer.

there didn't seem to be anything there I would think you can screw up if you have already punctured the system. lol. :/

1 battery cable
2 discharge air conditioning
3 drain cooling system
4 front wheelhouse rear panel and seal
5 electrical connectors from blower motor
6 evaporator outlet hose
7 pressure cycling switch
8 heater hoses
9 evaporator inlet hose - then remove expansion orifice tube
10 vapor pipe bracket from evaporator case
11 rear-right hand bolt from upper front fener
12 bulkhead bolts and nuts securing evaporator and blower assembly from bulkhead
13 evaporator case from vehicle
14 split evaporator case and remove core

that's the removal of it step by step from my '91's conv. auto. FSM - hope that helps, but it doesn't tell you what could go wrong to look out for :/

here are some pics of joby's 84. He modded his housing to get rid of stuff to make room. The pics may help out.
I ripped mine out of my 90. It was no fun. I also had the engine torn apart for more room.

I managed to pull the entire AC system out of my 90 all connected. Tons of fun!

I would not advise to try and remove it as 1 piece.

I would actually try to split the 2 halves, and pull it out from the top. I would spend about 5-10 mins messing with it. if it does not work, I would pull the left side with the fan attached to it. I would actually not try to remove it from the car but just get it to slide over.

I went from this

to this

I tore the crap out of mine. You dont want to do this.
I hope I remember how it goes back together. It has been a long time.

i had some hard time removing the bar between the frame and the hood luck because at bottom portion were it bolts to the frame with 3 rusty bolts, one of them ( top front ) was really rusted and the welded nut to the frame broke from its welding point, so i had to re weld it myself through this whole to be able to remove the bar and re install it later

and by removing the bar and the washer, nothing left on the way of taking the whole box out in one peice!!
