Hi. Maybe someone can help me. Last fall my a/c went out. When it happened, I noticed some steam/smoke coming up from the radiator fill area. I took the car in and had it checked. They topped off the system and said that'd fix it. It worked on and off for a few days but then went out again. Took it back and they said there was nothing they could do (goodyear), that the climate control brain was the problem.....but when I got the car back the air worked for some reason. Lasted for a few months and then it went out completely. I took it to a different shop which again topped off the system (didnt' help), they then replaced a sensor on the block (I think), no help. Took it back again and they replaced some other cheap part, but it still didn't work. Anyone have any ideas what it could be before I break down and take it to a dealer? Right now it blows hot air no matter the a/c setting.
There is a diagnostic mode that you can put the AC into that will tell you if there are any codes stored.
I am not exactly sure, but I think with the ignition on and the car not running, you hold down the temp. up
and down button at the same time, and then it will start giving you codes. I would post on the forum on
how to access codes and what they are, and someone should have it. Also, don't rule out a mechanical failure, too
many people are apt to tell you that if there is not a code, there is nothing wrong with it, which is wrong. Check to see
if you compressor is turning on when you put the AC on full blast. If it does, does it stay on for a few seconds and then
turn off, or does it stay on for a few minutes. If it stays on for a few seconds, then it may be low on freon, if it doesn't turn
on at all, then it is another problem entirely (bad press. switch, bad control unit). If it does turn on and stay on, seeming
like it is cycling correctly, then it could be a problem with the air ducts. Just try a few things, and see what it does, if it is
consistent, then it is probably mechanical, but if it is intermittent, then it would more than likely be computer/sensor related.
