It's near time again when I'll be needing new tires and an running Goodyears now. I am looking for an alternative as I would like to try something else. Anyone have any sugestions??
Thanks :)
It really depends on what your needs are and how much you want to spend as well as what sizes are available for the wheels you have.
If you want a good daily driver , long lasting , excellent BARGAIN of a tire , go with the Kuhmo's. They are quite good , especially considering you can get 275's near the $100+ mark.
If you want more traction and are ok with them lasting a bit less there are several good ones. As mentioned by Mr Mojo, those Pilots are pretty good.
Another vote for the Firestone Firehawks. Best traction street tire made.
Check the traction, wet and dry, ratings on Tire Rack. The Firehawk wet traction rating is better than all but the Michelin dry rating. They also ride quiet on top of it. I have been trying, unsuccessfully, to get them to make a 315/35.
I had Michelins on my Acura Legend. Driving down the freeway the rubber came off the tire like it was a retread. All they would offer is a prorated replacement. POS IMHO.
I'll bet that my Michelins are stickier than those Firehawks. I have a set, I may have to mount them and see for myself.
I'd love to hear your opinion, comparing the two. What I think you will find is that the Firehawks are at least as sticky as the Michelins dry and in the rain the Firehawks are absolutely incredible.
With your exhaust don't even bother commenting on how quiet the Firehawks ride.. :D
I have the first generation Firehawks and am very happy with them. Anyone know how the new "EP"'s are? I heard that they sacrifice grip for better tire life compared with the older "non-EP" version, but I don't know if that's true or not.
Vince,
I never had the older ones so I can't compare, but as you can see from the previous posts I really think these are the best tires I have ever had for traction.
Jeez, I hate sounding like a Firestone commercial. I really do NOT work for them.
I really don't like the Michelin XGT Z4s. The Michelin maybe good for drag racing. The sidewall did seem to be soft compared to the other tires. However, in the rain and lateral grip I feel it is the worst I've had on my car IMHO. I've run the GSCs, 1st gen SZ50s, Yokohama AVS Intermediates, and AVS Sports. My mom is on Kuhmos. I would recommend the Kuhmos, and SZ50s. Another tire to look into is the Yokohama A520. I have loved all the Yokohamas.
What ever you do, don't put Goodyear GSCs EMTs on. They just don't hold the
road as well as just about any other tire. I put a new set on a few weeks
ago, thinking they have been improved since 96. I may be flamed by these
tires are dangerous. A friend with GSCs didn't make a turn, as a result he
is now parting out his car.
