My vette runs great 85% of the time. The other 15% I have starting problems. Today i got in it to move it out of the garage. It started fine and moved it. When I got back in it to put it back into the garage, it wouldn't start, nothing but a click. This has happened many time since I have had the car. Nobody can seem to find out what is wrong with it. The battery is fine, Vats is ok, everything seems to check out. I do notice that there is a delay when I turn the key, about a 1/2 second, before the starter kicks in. The starter spins great (had it checkd out also). It has left me stranded several times. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Does it start fine cold? Do these problems happen cold or hot?
Have you checked grounds? Check at the starter but also make sure that the terminals on the battery are good.
I didnt' notice, is the car auto or manual? If auto then the next time it wont' start try starting in Neutral.
Are you sure the starter solenoid is good?
The last thing that I can think of that may affect this is if your key is old. Sometimes the pellet wears out just enough to affect starting. Try a spare key and see if that changes anything. I had actual experience with this.
I had the same problem with the key resistor pellet on an 87 vert. the only difference was that it killed all power "no dash lights or clicks" I was sure it was the starter so I replaced it then about a week later, same thing. Buddy that worked in svce. at Chevy house cut me 2 new keys "I thought he was nuts" turns out he was correct and never had that problem again.
It happens hot or cold. Have not checked the ground but I will do so. Terminal on the battery are good. I have an automatic and I did try to start it in neutral but to no avail. Don't know about the starter solenoid but I will check it. I also tried to other key but it didn't make any difference. Just tried the car and it started right up; a mystery. There is a pause when you turn the key to start though.
I know that the ICM can affect the car running but not sure about starting. Someone with more knowledge on that may have some answers for you about that.
Electrical stuff can drive you crazy but if you break it down to looking at one wire at a time then you will eventually find the problem. You will know your car inside and out by that time.
