Yea Joe, on this issue I was talking about a Denso starter. These starters came out on the 88 model if I remember correcty, same time the Denso AC compressor came out.
And on my 89 it was the original starter I was looking at. But, by this time I had already replace the flexplate with a new GM part. The only reason I did replace the starter was simply to try and protect the flexplate. I wanted more starter gear engagement.
There are many C4's around still using the original starter and flexplate with no problems.
Why my original flexplate had those "bad" sections of teeth I don't know. Possibly a slight warp in the plate?
cshuman I was looking closely at your picture. Look hard at the drive gear on your starter look at the wear marks on it. Then look at the wear marks on the flywheel. by the looks on the wear marks on the starter it looks like it goes in futher then what you are posting. In fact it looks like the wear would be almost even with the edge of the flex plax. Now honesly in over 30 years of working on these things this is somthing I do not recall ever checking. Your wear is kinda typical of a older car remember that when the starter engauges that is when the most force is put on the flex plate. The starter has to force its way into the flex place and that is the wearing you are seeing.
Thanks guys for the input. I got another starter from another parts house and it had a different gear on the bendix. The attached picture is actually showing the starter in operation. It almost covers all the width of the ring gear. Other than the gear on the bendix both the starters were the same, Delco Remy rebuilds.
Now it works perfect. It bolted up just like the original and didn't require any shims.
sure is a big diff! but, look at the two pics. the good one is extended considerbly more, as though the plunger mechanism is the difference. yes, or no?
happy that it works, but still a bit of mystery here. hope mine dosen't cause a problem.
The Bendix did come out further than the first one but I think the gear also had something to do with it. My suggestion is if you need a new starter and go with a rebuild is to make sure you check the travel and gear on the bendix of the replacement to make sure it matches your original. Live and learn
Thanks again to all for their input. This forum is a great tool!!! I've received alot of great input over the years and dealt with alot of great vendors.
