Default Starting Issues

Put a new fuel pump on the 88 and its trying to start, but wont stay running. When you turn the key to start it it trys to start but when you stop using the starter it quits. Getting fuel to the injectors, and it has new plugs and wires. Been working on it for 2 months and im plain stumped.

how did you test injectors?

have you used fsm chart A 3? it checks for spark and injector voltage. lots of things can cause it, has to be diagnosed. the fsm -shop manual- covers this in about two chapters.

unplug the MAF to see if it affects it.

you had the distrib out by chance? if it tries to start -as in some plugs firing- it could be retarded on base timing.
second quick item to check is one or more plugs -new, yes, but may be fouled already.

most likely you will eventually visit the diagnosis charts in the fsm, if you have one, or even the Chilton's or similar. it gets pretty complex, with ecm cars. may be simple -which may be the last thing checked.

Lots of possibilities here...

Can you verify that you're getting fuel pressure at the fuel rail during the whole time the startup sequence is going on?

It really sounds to me like the 4 pin connector on the distributor isn't connected or there is some other problem related to the connections between the distributor and the ECM.

The theory: When you first turn on the ignition, the ECM turns on the fuel pump for 2 seconds to prime the fuel system. When you start cranking the engine, the ECM turns on the fuel pump after it gets distributor reference pulses (right, Joe? ;-). The ECM also starts pulsing the injectors, synchronized with the distributor reference pulses.

So... If the distributor reference pulses are not there, no fuel pump and no injector pulses.

However... The ignition module in the distributor will still fire the spark plugs, but it will be in "bypass" mode, meaning there is no input (spark advance) from the ECM and the spark advance will be fixed at 6 degrees. This is the same bypass mode you get when you disconnect the little connector next to the brake booster.

And... There will be some fuel in the intake manifold from the cold start injector, so the engine will have a little fuel to try to start on. The cold start injector is controlled by the cold start switch on the front of the engine. It ONLY works while cranking and "times out" after 8 seconds. What you will see if this is the case is that the engine will crank fast for about 8 seconds as it is sorta running and then the cranking will slow down after the cold start switch opens.
