I know this subject has been beat to death, and I have done quite a bit of searching. I was just curious if anyone has ran into problems with rain with the open lid? I know avoiding standing water is a must (already do that), but what about serious rain storms, we tend to have a lot of those here in FL. Just don't want to run into any problems if I am traveling down the interstate and a T-Storm pops out of nowhere (which they do). I know there really isn't any performance gain on a stock engine, just kind of have the itch to do it for the sound and looks when I am at the local cruise in every Saturday night. I'm going to stay with a paper filter for obvious reasons.
Just think about where that water has to go. You wont have any problems. Even hitting water at 100 it wouldn't make it to the intake cause the air damn and where it flows. Now flowing down the hood some might get there, but if it was flowing by the gal it would just fill the bottom of the tray and overflow out. The suction from the engine is no where near enough to bring it to a stall from water.
If you don't feel my word is adequate take a hose and spray from every angle with the car off and see if you can even try to get enough to the intake. Don't worry about it unless you are mud bogging, then put a snorkel.
The ONLY guys that have air intake problems are the ones with the super scooper intake duct in the front license plate hole when they plow thru standing water thats as high as the opening....FAR TOO deep for a Corvette anyway...I have heard of them sucking up water, more from pushing it into the duct opening and in such amounts that it was pulled into the engine.
Never happen with an air intake thats non-stock as long as its in the same area as the stock. Open lid still has many baffles for water to get past before the filter even gets moist. I pressure wash under my hood, open top box, BIG section of K&N exposed and it never gets more than damp even when pressure washing.
