I recently replaced the fuel pump in mt 1993 coupe. Car is running great. I knew I was also having problems with the fuel tank level sensor. I found a real good explanation on the forum. I cleaned the carbon rods that the float rides on in an effort to get the thing working again. Tried to check resistance, but it was flakey. I put everything back together and hoped for the best. It always reads dead empty even with 7 gallons in the tank. So now the check gauges stays on all the time. I'm thinking the broken gauges is the reason why.
What is a good source for a fuel level sending unit? Is there someone who can repair the old one. I recall they are right pricey.
THANKS!!!!
Before you replace the sending unit at least check it with an ohm meter out of the tank. Move the float around and see what the resistance does. Should read about 10 - 110 ohms. Make sure the sender is the problem before you get another one.
There is MORE than one wiper to clean. There is the coil and wiper. And then there are 2 smaller wipers that ride on a metal surface which are the ground returns. They ALL have to be cleaned to get any positive results.
and sanding, scuffing ruins them. If anything use something like a q-tip to wipe them with wd-40 or elect contact cleaner. I use a mild acid to disolve some heavy corrosion on a sender I worked on.
Its also very very easy to bend the flaot arm. If thats bent, the float position is out of place.
Ecklers had new sender assys last yr for $180 (about)
