Hey guys my 87 coupe auto. Keeps throwing a mass airflow circuit code over and over. I've replaced the sensor twice and checked the harness. It seems there is some sort of short in the harness itself and I have inspected other areas of the harness and found numerous cracks, breaks, bare spots, and questionable repairs. I have made countless searches on the internet to no avail. I know of the one painless makes but I called and they told me it will not work with the vette computer. Does anybody know where I can get a new one? I can work with used but I'd guess they would be in a sad state like mine. My car is my daily driver now so I need to find one before I have a fire. Thanks for your help guys. Yall always come through.
The new harnesses were discontinued long ago. From what I've seen, you'll pay between $500 and $1000 for a used harness. Seems like a lot to fix one wire.
Which code are you getting? The ECM only tests the MAF during burnoff when you shut off the ignition. The only possibilities are:
Code 33: MAF sensor high - which means bad MAF or open in the wiring.
Code 34: MAF sensor low - which means bad MAF or short in the wiring.
My advice is to replace the MAF relays before you do anything else. Mounted on the firewall right behind the battery. They're less than $20 each.
Its not that difficult to "build" a harness....
If you can find the correct new plugs and most are available, take the old harness off and lay it out on a sheet of plywood and draw the wires and note the color and positions. Use old harness for reference.
Lay new wire in same place and make the plugs/connectors. Install.
hardest part is finding the right wire colors, stripes. There ARE bundled wire harness available that are all black with each wire numbered with a white number stamp every 6" so its easy to relate a color to a number. Just don;t loose the crossover code list that you'll have to have from then on.....
blue =1
orange =3
brown/wht strip =17
etc..... it can be done.
Look at Flea-Bay for used harness that can be had that may need some minor repair. If the main trunk is in good shape the branches can be repaired/replaced as needed by soldering in new pieces. This would be THE time to locate the factory splices and SOLDER them in place instead of the factory black tape..
