I have seen hundreds of threads on runners but; can't decide. Is it better to port and polish the stock runners or which brand can be bolted up with the same results?? I have a 1986 coupe with a L-98 getting ready to do a cam, heads, and intake but; that's it. Not for the track...
Not much can be done with the stock runners. Unless you do what I did, not for the feint of heart or time challenged. SLP's would be a good way to go with some porting. TPiS runners, big ching, but probably the best. Try to get some used ones on this forum or watch the Bay. You used to be able to get SLP's new for 280 bucks on some LS website.
You just doing runners or the whole intake? i've seen a few setups in the for sale section here and over at thirdgen. hopefully my first intake is here at the end of the week and I'll get to eyeball that.
Stock runners are too thin to really get much out of them as far as opening or enlarging. I've done it, but they end up like tin foil....and very prone to denting after that, hell, they dent in your hands if you squeeze them too tight while mounting !
You can certainly match the ports and open the end plates, but the tubes...maybe a 5% increase in size...hardly worth the aggrevation that comes with the task.
The plenum...match it to whatever runners you choose. Its nice if you pull the intake and match the base plate to the lower runner, otherwise the work above at the plenum is never fully utilized if there is still a problem at the bottom....The stock baseplate CAN be opened and shaped, its just time and work. Well worthwhile if you polish everything and port match it all.
