1993 just dies !!!
car has been running great till last week .. started after work and it just plain died.. several times after start finally stayed running... got home and parked and it died and would not fire off after..
it was acting like the opti was bad.. so I replaced the opti but the die problem is still there starts fine runs a minute or two then just dies...
any suggestions? 93 with 99K miles
Thanks
1. An inline spark plug test light connected to the coil will allow you to see if the coil is firing while cranking. If the coil is firing consistently and strongly then it is likely that the coil, ICM, ECM and associated wiring are ok. If the coil is not firing then you will need to isolate each component including the distributor to see what is wrong. It would be best to get a factory service manual if you want to do this although there is a lot of info about doing this on the web.
2. If the coil is firing then connect the inline spark plug test light to one (or several) of the spark plugs, start cranking and see if the energy is getting through the distributor to the spark plugs. If the spark plug light is firing consistently and strongly then you will need to expand your search for the problem to the fuel system, etc. It would be best to get a factory service manual at this point. If the light is not firing while cranking then the problem probably lies inside the distributor.

Check the fuel pressure while the problem is happening. Or at least for starters, listen for the fuel pump.If there is no spark off the coil, and since the opti was changed, the same problem seems to still be there. A likely suspect would be the ICM.
ICM had a life life time warranty at autozone so they swapped it out..
still the same - will not fire off now-
starting to suspect fuel pump - I turned the key to on and pushed in the fuel pressure connection (where your supposed to connect the fuel pressure gauge) with my finger and only got a tiny bit...if its supposed to be over 40Psi shouldn't it be shooting out of there??
Thanks
Yes, the fuel should squirt like hell out of there if the fuel system is pressurized. But having a fuel gauge is the only right way to check it and to know what's going on.
When you parked it and it did not start did you actually check for spark at any time?
Having a fuel pump that does not run is going to cause a no start, just like no spark.
It was the fuel Pump ! - Replaced and it fired right off !
THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP AND SUGGESTIONS !!!!
by the way, the fuel pump that Pep Boys sells is 1.5" to short (I hear some have that problem, Ha) for the bracket.. had to return it and buy one from Auto Zone - fit great....
really an pretty easy job
Thanks again for the help
