Default Scanner Advice

Hi guys, I have a 96 W/ LT4 and I am leaning towards the opti as all have sugested. My scanner is a few years ols and is a basic code reader. I would like to upgrade as my car is not showing a code, but as I read the FSM and other posts I see that some read more than just basic codes. What is a good unit, fairly cheap? If it says it scans data and logs info is this what I need?
I will appreciate any input. I am near a Harbor Freight and see they have some different models.
Thanks
Alan

As you know basic scanners just show the codes. What I think you want to do is read the OBD2 data stream to get the information as to what is going on. The more you pay for one the more you get. You can always get computer software to do this also with an interface.

You will get information in this tech section but will probably get much more information, experience and recommendations if you post in the scan and tune section.

I have a basic OBD2 Harbor Freight code reading unit for my other cars. But I think no matter what upgraded scanner they have, you want to have more. I am not that familiar with the upgraded scanners they sell so this is just a loose opinion of what their full capability is.

Lucky!!! You and your OBD2....

Yes, your scanner can only do that.... scan. You can get the data stream units, memory data stream units or full interface units.

Easiest is getting the hardware and software to hook up to your computer. Usually is a box that runs off USB 2.0. Do you remember that stupid scene from Fast and Furious? Before his floorboard falls off because the "manifold is in danger"

Imagine a program like that...... but realistic..... and not ricey..... and doesn't make you feel like you should drive your car into a brick wall at WOT without a seat belt on....
