Default Fuel Tank Wiring

On my 88 there is a white plastic cube just below the tank mount that all 3 wires pass through. Does anyone know what it is and is it necessary? It is not shown in the FSM. Thanks

Don't know what you mean by a "cube". There is a connector to the forward harness but that's in the passenger compartment. '89 has an extra wire to nowhere at the pump which is for the LT5 that never made it into production (until '90). All tanks need a ground wire to the tank to keep static electricity from blowing you up when you fuel it. And GM (and all the others) uses various gadgets to keep the harness secure so that it doesn't flop around and abrade the insulation for the same reason.

Now that you've posted a picture - or that it's now showing on my computer - that looks like some sort of insulator to secure the harness to the tank or some support. As I noted, you don't won't it flopping around and abrading the insulation.

I guess you don't know either, but thanks anyway.
