My 87 vette was fine till she started to act funny. I tried turning her one time and it took 3 times for me to get her to turn. I thought it was the battery since i've been having battery problems lately so I took the battery from my 97 Blazer which was the same fit and had the same amount of cranking amps etc... i put it in and everything works fine but the car just wont turn over. I hear a clicking sound. Some people tell me they think its the starter, others say its probably the ignition, while even some say it could be my distributor coil? I'm not sure which.. and I want to avoid bringing it to a shop and get over charged . Any ideas on what it could be ?
yup...but be safe, replace the solenoid and check the starter brushes while you are at it. To be more reliable, change the whole starter assembly with a new or rebuilt unit. There is nothing like being stranded.
I have one question though... how am I supposed to pull the starter out with the two lines right underneath it ? Theres nowhere for me to wiggle it out. It looks as if I have to take the cross bars off then detach the mufflers to do it. theres nothing in the 1984-1996 manual that says anything about this.

If you look at the two lines you will see a bracket holding the lines to the bell housing just below the starter. Take that bolt out to release the lines. Then loosen the "NUT" holding the back of the starter up, remove the large and small nut holding the starter wires, remove the two large bolts. The starter is completly loose now...slid the starter towards the front of the car and push the two lines (gently) towards the drivers side. The starter should slide out for you...DOn't let it hit you in the head. :yesnod:
I didn't see a bracket holding the two lines together. I tried to see if i could bend the lines out just slightly.. but it wont move. Maybe its a different setup ?
I wanted to ask you how you got your starter wires disconnected ? because i cant seem to get enough room to be able to turn the friggin nuts. Its either the two lines are in the way or the precat from the exhaust is in the way. This job is becoming more and more frustrating. I need any advice quickly as possible because i've been without a car for over 3 days and this starter job is becoming a nightmare to remove ! Any help would be appreciated thanks :mad
Just wanted to let you know that I finally got it! I had to go and buy a smaller socket wrench to be able to get in those tight spots. Now the Vette starts up with no trouble at all. Really had me going there for a while. As for the bracket you were referring to that was holding the two lines together... I noticed that there really wasnt any at all. Probably the previous owner didnt put it back on. So I didnt know where to look till it came to mind there was none at all. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated ! :D
