Ok people I am sure some have gotten this code 36 before. It is on an 89 auto. It happens a soon as I start the car. No delay. Service engine light is on instantly. If I disconnect the battery it will go out for a while then Bam, I start the car and it is on before I can let go of the key. book says it is MAFS circuit, trans shift problem. or DIS fault. Any ideas. Thanks in advance. PS what is DIS? And not having a problem with the trans.at this time

36 is a MAF Sensor Burn-Off fault. Could be as simple as replacing the burn-off relay.
Here is my 86 info, 89 is wired a bit different, but it may help you .
Both the Power relay and the burn off relay are directly behind the battery on the firewall...Before replacing the relay unplug and replug the wires from both the burn off relay, and also the maf sensor ..Sometimes corrosion can cause problems...WW
The two relays are identical on the '89s. You can just swap the connectors from one relay to the other.
I don't understand why you are getting a MAF burnoff error code. The test is only done when you shut off the engine. It has to run for a certain time (I don't recall how long) and I think the coolant has to reach a certain temperature before the ECM commands a burnoff cycle.

There is no way for the ECM to let you know there is a problem, after the ignition is turned off. It would have to let you know the next time the ignition is turned on, thus the light, as soon as he turns on the ignition.
