Default 1985 LT1 not running right

Hi, I have a 1985 LT1 that runs great as long as you are getting on the throttle hard but skips, runs very rich, and sometimes wont idle correctly when sitting in park. Other times it runs fine all the time but then when it takes a notion to it starts acting up again. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

No LT1 engines made until 1992, you have a very rare car.

Its actually an L98 unless someone did a swap. But anyway I would start with making sure the throttle body is good and clean.

Throttle body seems clean, good and shiny, quick response when car is running right.

Sounds like a typical injector issue. Runs a little better when cold?

Get an ohms reading on the injectors when the motor is warm report what you find

No it actually is hard to start when cold. But there again when it is doing right fires right up with no problems and runs slick as can be.

could be the mass air flow sensor or the power relays to it. Pretty sure the 1985 had unique relays for them, it has been a while since i had an 85 so hopefully someone with more knowledge of that will comment.

Thanks, Ill try to locate the relay for the MAF and change it first. Is there anyway to have the MAF checked to see if it is okay or not?

Before going too wild with replacing parts around the MAF (They get expensive on the '85) I'd check and make sure you don't have a vacuum leak and that your injectors are reading good. More importantly though, check your fuel pressure, see if it leaks down quickly after you turn off the car.

I have a leaky cold start injector that causes it to run rich occasionally and demonstrates similar issues when my car is cold. Once it warms up and goes into closed loop it runs like a champ.

The '85 has a burnoff module which is VERY pricy if it is bad. The factory service manual has a procedure to check the burnoff module.

As suggested, do this free stuff first to get a better idea what is going on.
