Having trouble with my 94 auto. Recently turned the key off and the starter would engage and engine would shut off. Turn the key back to the forward position and engine would restart. I pulled the starter out and had it tested, checked out fine. Replaced the ignition switch (not the key switch) with a Borg Warner replacment. Worked fine for a day and started doing it again. Is there somthing that can be screwing up the ignition switch? I am lost here, has anyone had a problem like this? Thanks!!!
Check the wires going to the starter. You NEVER know but this could point you in the right direction.... One day I was hooking up my subs for a system I installed in my truck. I put the positive wire too far back into the area in the amp and it was hitting the back metal plate. Long story short, when I took the key out, the power would stay on sometimes and keep the sub on.
Power wise, I would start with a power meter, start at the starter and work backwards. Measure the voltage at the starter and go backwards with the key off.
My guess....Dirty grounds at a starter circuit or even the starter and maybe a switch is bad and stuck open and is flaky.
With the engine off and the key out, you don't want any voltage, so if you check voltage at the starter and you have it, that means something is open or bad from the starter backwards. Check fuses and make sure they are all the way in and the right size.
Make sure that the alignment of the linkage and operation of it is correct.
Check out the start inhibit relay and the area around it. Might cause starter to crank if it is no good mechanically.
Does it crank with the gear selection in drive? Because if it does, that would eliminate the entire start circuit from the key switch thru the start relay solenoid.
Or, try pulling the fuse #10 and see if the problem still occurs.
The place to start is the FSM start circuit schematic. There should be several switches and relays between the battery and starter that prevent spontaneous cranking.
A HUGE thanks for the advice guys!!! Would anyone have a copy of the
FSM start circuit schematic that they could scan and post? (Thanks!!!) I know...I must get an FSM.
This is for an '87. I didn't post it before assuming there may be some significant changes in the ensuing years. Hopefully someone will post one for your year.
