Ive been asking a lot of questions and have been getting a lot of good answers, thanks to the forum members. Ive been working on putting an L98 into an off road racer, to blend a classic GM motor into a vehicle with a much different purpose from the 87 C4. So here is a picture of what was installed into the vehicle. Its not an award winner or chrome show-piece but I think does justice to the breed. Please excuse the chains and rope used for lifting the motor into the new engine bay.
wow, I look at what other guys have done with C4 motors and it makes me want to be like them ... NICE looking work in the pictures you put up. I am learning that the cool aftermarket stuff for the L98 is pretty much an endless selection limited only by your budget. What is it, race happy but cash poor....

If I still had my Jeep, my L98 may have made it's way under the hood, too. The 4 litre lacked !!
thanks ! Agent 86. Good to know someone out there knows where Im going with this project. Its a blend for me, in 1970 I bought a '67 427 big block for a steal price but had to give it up in a divorce. For this project I looked for that motor, but could only find junk or stuff way out of my price range. So I figured the classic L98 beast woud be a good compromise -- shes no chrome beauty or show girl but its mine ! and I got it out of the original C4 for $1500 !

For a supposedly "crappy" engine, the L98 sure finds its way into a good many applications.
It has the one thing that makes a great motor for the street. Gobs and gobs of low end torque.
About how much did the rebuild cost you ? For the motor alone ? I am curious so I can start to budget money for rebuilding or replacing mine. Which is better, cheaper ?

hi guy, yup, its a torque monster, which is why it will be great for my application too. alot of the off road driving is slow/low throttle but under heavy loads turning 44" tall 20" wide tires through mud and up steep hills, and for the straight and level stuff it has great throttle response.
I bought it for $1500, it was still in the original car, and that included the flex plate, fuel ines, and all the bracketry and accessories. even the starter, which is nearly new. I havent been keeping track of every penny Ive spent but Id say that including a new wire harness for motor functions Im at about $3000 ( spent enough at Summit to get a $50 certificate !). So yes, for a total of $4500 I could have bought a crate motor, Vortecs are popular and a great motor, but I didnt want to go that route because this way is lots more fun, plus the aftermarket stuff for the L98 is endless, and I just think there is a "cool" factor with the L98, esp. with alum heads.
