Will my diff survive?
700r4 has been bulletproofed/shift kit and apart from headers and a free flow exhaust + ratio change , no other mods.
I am planning on dropping in a 400 cu inch motor , old school carburetted with a mild solid roller cam , edelbrock heads or the like , nothing too radical , just some more grunt and power over the 245 hp wimpy motor. I'm not planning on doing any racing barring maybe a run at the local dragstrip just to see what times I can do. All I really want is to make the car into a "road warrior" , something you can go out with and be a hooligan in.
My question is , is the Dana 36 strong enough to take the torque of a 400 ci motor.

Depends how hard You hookup off the line.
A built up SBC 400 ci engine can make over 600 ft/lbs of flywheel torque with modern cylinder heads, correct chosen camshaft, ect.
Switching to a modern synthetic gear oil in the Dana 36 will help durability some.
If it was my car, I would use only Royal Purple 85-140 W gear oil in your application & intended usage.
Redline Shock Proof Gear oil is very good too.
But I have found through my own long term testing,
Royal Purple 85-140 W is superior still yet today.
