Default Code 42...WTF

OK, here's the deal...ever since I disconnected the EST to set the timing, I've had a cose 42 set....I knew it was going to be there after disconnecting the EST, but I can't get it to clear. I've disconnected the negative cable for about 15 min....then pulled the ECM fuse for 15 minutes, but I still have the code as soon as I start up. Car runs great, no miss, acceleration is great, idle is just a little rough, but nothing very bad. Am I just stupid about clearing this code, or do I have something else going on??? Any help appreciated....

This happened to me too. Then it mysteriously went away.....for a while. I also noticed that I would set the timing at 8º BTDC and the next time I would check it it wpuld be 4º then back to 8º. Then went to start the car one morning and all it did was crank. No spark at all. Mr module had gone away. After replacing the ignition module, haven't seen it since. I am not saying you should go out and spend $30-$50 on a new module. I am saying however this could be a symptom of a bad module. I would do all the other tests first. Check wiring....Check that pesky little EST connector first. and make sure your timing isn't too far advanced.

Check your base timing again to see if the EST connection is good. Then shut down and reseat that connector several times. There may be some corrosion on the contacts.

BTW, next time you want to set base timing, before you start the engine with the EST connection open, jumper ALDL pins A&B. The ECM then won't throw that code 42.
