Ok I will be ordering a new clutch master cylinder in the coming weeks. What is involved swapping these out, and is this somthing I should have someone w/ more experience do?
Corvette Fever did a how-to article a few months back on replacing the clutch master and slave cylinders together. It did not look too complicated. See if you can get the article off their website, or maybe someone can scan it and email it to you (I don't have a scanner :( )
hi MBvette,
I can say it is a pain to bleed the system! just changed the fluid in my 86, and it was slow going (took 3+ hrs with hand pump). the system seems to move very little fluid. I think its reccomended to fill everything before assembly because of that.
I would replace the slave cyl and hose while your at it (you have to take the slave cyl off to bleed it properly anyway).
If you can get the work done for a reasonable amount by a shop you trust then I'd let them do it.
but if you think you'd like to tackle it yourself I think I can find that article on how to do it.

Very hard to get at mounting bolts into firewall with plastic reservoir attached.
Not a hard job , just an access problem
Much easier to remove the reservoir (bolt through center inside , put rag underneath to stop fluid getting on paint) which allows much better access to the 2 mounting bolts.Found an extention with a wobbly end works best , hard to get a straight line on bolts
PITA to work with your head on the floor under the dash to release spring clip holding the cylinder yoke to the pedal.
Also crack the outlet hose fitting while the cylinder is still mounted to the firewall.
Bled mine in ten minutes by myself using a self bleeder hose at slave.I let gravity fill the system before pumping pedal.
Replace in reverse
It takes a little time, but is pretty easy to do. It took me 6 hours to replace the master & the slave. To remove the master remove the batery - much better access. Bench bleed both the slave & master. I finish bleed mine w/ a helper pumping the pedal & me opening & closing the bleed screw. Bleeding only took me 20 min. or so. The CF artical was spot on & had good pics.
