Default 1985 vette

hello,I been having an issue the last couple of weeks,My volts readout comes on sometimes and goes on and off a couple times that shows 17-18 volts. Then it goes back to the 14 volts readout where it allways have been. The alternator is 2 years old with about 5000 miles on it.I was wondering is there a problem coming on.It will come on when the volts are too high or to low.And it does not come on when the volts are between 12-15 unless you turn the switch on.

I have the same issue on the 85 I'm trying to resurect. When the display goes to 17+ volts I have checked the alt output & it's 14volts or so.I think mine is in the dash or connections.Right now its not a priority until I get the engine back together & running.Take a multimeter & see what the true voltage is at the alt when it is showing high voltage. If it is truly putting out 17 volts fix ASAP so you don't trash electronics.
One question I have about a false high voltage reading is does it affect the ecm or put it in open loop or anything? I can't find anything in the fsm on this.......Bob
