Default Cam Change w/o Dropping Oil Pan ?

Is it possible to R & R the Timing Chain Cover w/o removing the Oil Pan on a LT1?

You have to drop the front of the pan, but you don't have to remove it.

Won't that tear the gasket ? How do you re-seal it? Don't you need to apply permatex?

Not really, well maybe in the corners where the gasket loops around the front seal. The gasket is some sort of sillycone and generally holds together real well and I have reused them with no problems.

Of course by the time you go through the trouble of dropping the front of the pan, you could have spent another 15 minutes and simply removed it.

More than one person that's dropped the front of the pan has bent the rear corners and then found that they have a nice oil leak upon reassembly. How lucky do you feel?

Take the extra couple minutes to remove the pan. When I did my cam swap it only took me one afternoon and I changed the gasket on the pan.

The likelyhood of dropping the front of the pan and not damaging the original gasket is slim. Drop the pan and install a new gasket, much easier.
