Dave, Before you answer, you need to find out what year. On Raul's '87, the aux fan is in front of the radiator controlled by a temp switch in the driver's side head. It does not come on with the A/C.
Ray has it right. The Aux fan comes on at some ungodly high temp. I can't remember exactly but around 240 or so. Main comes on with AC or at around 228.
My 90 has the dual fan set up, stock and both fans are supposed to come on with A/C ON. Now, without A/C ON, fan operation at idle is temp dependent. Just replaced my primary fan (top left) last weekend cause it was dead (both relays checked good). Those fan motors are exposed to lots of dust/ dirt and with 63K, must have been time. Elected to replace the second fan motor, cost per motor was around $40. All is well.
Not sure how 884-89's operate.
