SY1 Intake to replace CFI?
Where do I even begin to look at having a new lid machined? I'm concerned that this could be a costly route compared to porting the stock intake, the holley projection route or going with an Edelbrock performer intake and 650DP carb setup. I assume going carb gives me more cam options for the future, w/o worrying about the ECM. Tough call...
The other thought, is to just pick up the intake and sell it to finance other mods. I've heard these things are typically hard to find and can get expensive.
I've got one on my 84, I made my own top out of 5/16 aluminuim, pretty easy to cut w/ a sawzall, the bolt pattern is the hardest part, the bolts are 1/4" & there are alot of them. I used a single 2bbl tbi on it. It makes great mid-top end power, but really needs a great deal of tuning to have a good daily driver.
I used to have that single tbi on that holley projection intake, it had great torque down low. It was a tight fit under the hood, but I made it fit. It even had a egr mount, I passed the local emissions test w/ it. I probably switch back to it some time. I was getting greedy for hp when I swapped over the the smoky, I was happier w/ the holley.
You can port the intake, just remember that it takes alot of time & becareful of the areas where theres coolant & oil, you can break through. Any of these mods will require a fuel pressure increase at minimal.
I've been reading a lot about the SY1 and adapting it to the CFI, seems simple enough. Should I be concerned with poor performance in the lower RPM range like I've read occasionally? I think I'll company the intake upgrade with a new cam and heads if I can ever find a set. I like the Dart Iron Eagles, but they're almost as much as a set of aluminum Edelbrock performers around here. Converter and gears this might be a hot little CFI badged car.
I have a cam question. When people refer to the Comp 2040 or 2050, where do I find one of these? I don't see the same number when I'm looking, am I missing something.

With Xram,Offy,SY-1 intakes you will sacrafice low end for more top end power.
When I was running a cfi 350 best time I got was a 13.3 @99, so yes you can definetly get them to run nice.
At the time
X-ram
90lb injectors
1.6rr's
iron eagle heads
2040 cam
D44
nitto 555r
9.5 in 2500 stall
fpr was set at 16psi
Long tubes,no cats, borlas (long tubes that you know have)
EBL/Flash ECM
Always felt the cam could have been bigger. Believe me ... once you start to get into upgrades your always gonna want more.. so take that into consideration before you build. Unless you absolutely want and are gonna keep a CFI based car then go for it. If you think you are gonna want to build more and more then seriously look into your first upgrade being the ECM that I used... then you can easily go multi-port injection and your upgrades will be unlimited.
The first car I built I bought when I was 14, an '80 Z28 with approx. 350hp. I spent a fortune on that car, modding and wanting more and more... Now that I'm a lot older (20+ years later) I have the money, and not sure what I want. This car seems faster than my Camaro, but I'm sure it has everything to do with handling. The best I had my Camaro was high 13's low 14's. I "think" I'll be happy with a low 13's car, mid 12's would be awesome someday too.
I've always been a carb guy, and even though I'm a techie by trade the whole computer in a car scares me, because I don't know it as well. I can learn it, but the carb always seems like an easy way to go. So I'm trying to force myself to change, and think past the carb!
Do you think the 2050 will be a better cam? I still need to bolt hose headers on... I only have a cat, and muffler elims now, hoping I don't need to add mufflers. No emissions here for a car over 20yrs old.
I keep collecting parts to build it, I need to get off my butt and put it together!

That said I think as far as cam I'd go a bit more agressive that the 2050... 268H is what I liked in the 350, with a set of the Patriot heads. Ran that setup the last year I ran the Xram and liked it. Had a nice SOTP feel to it.
If you go that route then when your comfortable try the ECM... I'm not a tuner either but that ecm is a true self learn and was easy for me to get going. At least that way done the road when you decide you want MPI, it won't cost you much to change and you already have a good cam and descent flowing heads.
My present set up is a 388 roller, patriot heads, more agreesive cam than what you may want, true dual exhaust (highly recommend that), with the same stall and gears. Runs with the stock C6's. So its a ton of fun to drive.
I heard the knock on SY is that it is too big unless you have a stroker. Plate can be made to use a bored stock CF TB units
I ran the 2040 cam. It was a nice fit on TQ. I swapped in a CC 224/230 @ .05 114lsa and picked up more HP for sure. 5000 rpms vs 5800 rpms.
