i have a stock 85, and every since i bought it, its been running worse and worse since i got it.. driving it home it ran ok, but i could feel it missing when i got into the gas. i have replaced plugs distributor cap and rotor. when i took it around the block yesterday, it ran rough at any acceleration. Today i wanted to check the timing, i follwed the directions in the book, started it, let it warm up. It made it to about 150 degrees before it started stumbling and died. Now it will start as soon as i hit the key, but dies immediately
yea they're all good. I wandered if i could have messed up the base timing some how. I disconnected the EGR vacuum solenoid so i could loosen the distributor bolt, then reconnected it, unplugged the EST connector , and started the car, then the rest went as previously stated.
this isnt just a miss though, this is a not running at all kinda problem. i guess i should just go ahead and replace them to count that out. I have never had wires go so bad they wouldn't even allow it to start though. Right now it has the universal accell wires on it, i really dont like those anyway
yes i did bolt down the ground strap, and im thinkin its not a fuel problem, because its ran rich since i got it. i checked the new plugs, and while they arent solid black, they do have plenty of black on them, so its getting plenty of fuel. I was going to check fuel pressure, do a compression test, and test some sensors today, but it wont stay running.
Do you have any stored codes? Also check to see if your service engine light is coming on when you turn the key on. If that light is blown or has been removed then you could be missing some important information.
no i dont know what the timing is doing, i was in the process of checking it when it died, i never made an adjustment on it, i loosened the bolt and was waiting for it to hit operating temp and it started stumbling and died. hey how does the paper clip trick work? i did it like 10 years ago, i forget how it works
are you talking about the paper clip. to pull out codes????? if that is the question. I dont know since all my dash is tosted. I never seen my dash work yet
to obtain the codes you need to run a wire or paperclip between terminals A and B. "A" is in the top row all the way to the right and "B" is in the top row right next to A. Before doing that, turn on the key and see if the service engine light even comes on. If it does, turn off the key, plug in the paperclip then turn the key to the on position and start counting. It will start with a code 12, 3 times counted 1 blink then 2 blink then followed by any codes you may have.
i feel like a dumbass asking this, but ummmm.... wheres the OBD connector at? im not seeing it under the dash, am i blind? There's no service engine light, but the check engine light does stay on
I am not sure where it is on the 85 but on my 90 it is at the bottom of the dash near your right leg. Service engine light is the check engine light... doing this off memory.. if the light is staying on then that means you have some stored codes... write down all of the codes it gives you
im not seeing anything to use under the dash. There's nothing under there besides one big connector that is attached to the steering column, and wires running everywhere
that pic is a little blurry, but it looks like the OBD connector is hanging from the bottom of the dash.. ive looked under there like 15 times, and i swear there is no OBD connector under my dash. The guy that had it before took the interior apart, i thought maybe he pushed it back somewhere, but nothing looks out of place under there.... im so lost right now its not even funny but i do appreciate all of you trying to help!
well i finally found the OBD connector, he couldnt have hidden it any better! But the bad news is there where no stored codes, so im back to square one
