I did a search anf found my problem very common. My AFR's Centerbolt Valve Cover gasket is leaking. AFR recomends cutting the post 1/8" to 1/4" to allow more travel / pressure on the gasket because they don't cut the thread's base deep enough.?
It shouldn't have made a difference because the Posts need to be trimmed about an 1/8" inch. Washeres wouldn't do anything.AFR said they didn't machine the holes deep enough so shorten the stud posts and thia will allow more clamping load on the perimiter of the covers improving the seal.
They are proud of their pieces no doubt.....for $2K for a set of heads, I don't expect to be drilling out things/adding washes/etc....pretty much expect plug and play......
I have the AFR/TPIS heads on mine......great set of heads no doubt, I went to the center bolt valve covers since TPIS center me center bolt vs. perimeter for my 85 forcing me to buy new valve covers (my engine builder offered to tap out the heads for perimeter since I had the stock valve covers which I declined) since I thought the center bolt were an upgrade anyway.....are they??? for oil leaks, always wondered that???
Not to change the subject but looking at TPIS's website it looks like they are offering a different set of aftermarket heads now....I did not see the AFR's out there anymore???? cost factor maybe?????
Mine are about 3 years old and had the same issue. Really easy fix though -- just cut about 3/16" off of the valve cover stud threads and it fit just fine.
