Default Low running temperature

I know this is not normal but my 87 L98 runs at around 158 degrees. Is'nt normal operating temperature about 180 deg . the coolant light comes on when i first start it and Ive topped off the rad. and it still stays on. cant seem to be able to find the problem with the coolant light of the low temp running.

Any ideas?

Are you running a thermostat? You're right, normal operating temperatures should be higher than 180 if you have that thermostat. 195 if stock.

You found the secret that all vette owners want to know. How to make the engine run cooler.......

But actually, it sounds like the thermostat might be stuck in the open position.

When was the last time you changed the coolant and stat.

I think I need to pull it and see, also I heard you can drill a small hole in the stat to get better coolant performance

Properly designed thermostats do not need anyone drilling holes in them. You should first buy and install a new 195 F thermostat. Yours might be a 160, or missing, or stuck open.

The small holes are to help burp the system , if you put in a new 195 stat you can drill a 1/16" hole in the inner rim of the stat to help with this.....WW

Baloney. You burp cooling systems when the thermostat is open, thus you don't need holes anywhere in the thermostat.

I originally said Baloney also, but after I put 2 holes in my stat I never needed to jack the front up and burp the car again. The 2 holes allowed the air to burp without going through that whole process..Alot of the stats now come with holes already in them. The new Robert Shaw I just purchased has holes..WW

Do you have a oil cooler?
I had a 165 stat with a zr1 and it ran at 150 on a cool day. Zr1 has a extra oil cooler

Why would you want the run the engine in that temperature range. Sounds like the oil would not even get hot enough to bake off the moisture and impurities.

Or is there a specific reason to do this.

Are you sure the car is actually running at that temperature? You could have a defective coolant temperature sensor or display.

My car has a 195 degree thermostat and my normal temps are 200 to 205 degrees. I see 230 to 235 on really hot days with the A/C on. Pretty normal from what I seen in many places.
