Default Instrument/dash problems

My wife has a 1990 coupe. At times the instrument panel will go dark (blank), when this happens if the ign. switch is turned off and turned on again the instruments will light up and then go dark again. Has anyone else had this problem. Please help!! [IMG][/IMG]

the complete cluster? or just the LCD?

Could be a bad ground, bad Cluster or bad CCM. Did you check the CCM for any codes?

Welcome to the 1990 instument cluster club. Mine was also acting up with its display. I removed my cluster cleaned off the pins with some electrical contact cleaner and reinstalled. What do you know it fixed it.

If the 90 cluster is like my 87, then most likely the pin carrying the current for the lamps has unsoldered itself due to age relaxed spring pressure on the socket. There is a single row of pins that the 2 boards are interconnected by and the pin closest to the center of the board carries the lamp current. Resoldering the male pin won't fix it, but replacement of the socket will. An easy permanent fix is to solder a short insulated piece of hookup wire from the rear board to the front board.

I know these are different units, but it sounds as if the connection has come loose, you need to get in there and resolder some stuff.
