I just got an Ed Wright chip and I was told it had a max of 36 degrees of WOT timing advance. I was also told this was safe to run with my Nitrous, is this true??? I don't really want to destroy my engine now that I finally have it back togther.
A great deal of this depends on how much you're planning on spraying. The standard mfg's rule of thumb is 2 degrees of retard for every 50 hp of N2O. This is actually somewhat conservative but I would NEVER recommend second guessing the mfg. on a cast piston mill! I would say you're good for a 100 shot but I would recommend running a plug one heat range colder and perhaps adding a little unleaded race gas or a good octane booster just to keep it safe. Anymore than that amount (up to 150, you don't want to go over this on your stock bottom end) and you'll need to retard the timing.

MMMM Well i ran about 2-20lbs bottles a weekend on my Stock L98 block and it was a 150 shot? But i am at a mile high i dont know about your location but we need O2 up here so it is not really that bad on a motor or atleast on mine it was fine and having 98K miles she does not smoke and that was after a full year of running nitrous and never changing plugs. But i ran full timing on mine car i never degreed it and even on my 305 tpi camaro i ran 175hp shot but i think i just had all my stuff really tuned right? Well i would just check the plugs after a race and see what they look like (rich or lean)
The altitude probably saved you... But I'll tell you this; after running N2O for the last 14 years or so I've been able to witness a lot of, shall we say, mishaps... 150 shot of N2O seems to be the 'breakeven' point on cast piston motors. It will live for awhile but eventually it will pop. Keep in mind that detonation isn't the only thing that will kill a nitrous motor...If you've ever seen a BMEP chart from a dyno run on a N2O mill you'll know what I'm talking about. You could never experience detonation on your 150 shot cast piston motor and still destroy it! It's cylinder pressure spikes that do in the ring lands on cast pistons.

PS- I'm slightly over sea level in Arkansas...
Timing advance with nitrous? Doesn't that = very bad things? Did you mean to say timing retard? I am spraying a 100 shot and I am 5 degrees retarded.
That's what I always thought, but according the the people at Fast Chip I'll be ok, and I tried it this morning and nothing went "boom" so I guess I'm ok. I'm planning on putting in octane booster when I use the spray just to be safe.
