Default Where should my base timing be?

It won't run at all at the stock setting of 6 degrees BTDC. My mechanic seems to think more along the lines of 20-30 degrees. Do I just crank it until it idles? How do I figure this out? I tried calling comp cams, but they are all done for the day. What do you guys think?

Cam specs: 280/288, 230/236 @.050, .544/.555 lift

You might want to pull the #1 plug and verify that the rotor is pointing at #1 when at TDC compression.

It sounds like your balancer may have broken apart and messed up the timing marks. It might be worth a look since the timing is off so much.

So should it be close to the stock base timing then?

If you set base timing to 30 degrees, pray that your knock sensor works

Remember that when you set initial timing, there is a connector that needs to be disconnected (timing bypass wire by the brake booster-tan and black wire I think). Set that stock to 6 degrees, no more than 10 really considering you might want a little more initial advance because of the camshaft and how it fills the cyls.

When you plug that bypass connector back together, timing will now advance from the 6 degrees based on the computer program. That's how you should start off doing it. Clear the code 42 after you set the timing by disconnecting the negative bat cable for about 20 seconds.

I have found out that it should be set near 6 degrees base timing, but I have had a mother of a time finding the EST wire. It is by the brake booster though?

Fish around behind hte engine block on the driver's side of the car. It may of slipped back down there too. It is a single brown wire that has a round connector on it.

The EST wire/connector on my '86 is tan with a thin black stripe. Same location; taped to the loom next to the master brake cylinder.

I just timed mine again today (followup on the dist gear inspection mandated by Mr. Scorp508's gear disaster) after driving it a couple days with an "eyeball" timing setting...It was 10* BTDC...Ran much rougher than usual...Putting it back to 6* made it run much smoother...

It also idled ~200 - 300rpm higher at 10* than 6*...Don't know what that was all about...
