All four Bose speakers went d e a d at once on my 86. I didn't notice any pop or anything, just turned on the radio and they didn't work. Radio is working, and antenna works - just no sound from the speakers. I checked every fuse and they are all good. Searched archives here and it sounded like it must be the relay, so I replaced that. Still nothing. Where should I look next?
well if its any thing like my 91 it has a seperate reciever for the radio, mine was a little box located under the glove box, underside of dash. When mine went bad, I had no sound at all, replaced it, and it worked great. My head unit lit up, turned the antenna on and off, did everything it should but no sound. That is probably the culprit. Happy hunting!
I solved all of my problems by junking the whole system and starting over.
If you're determined to stay stock this obviously is not the way to go, but if you just want a system that works I'd say yank the Bose and let it collect dust in your attic.
If the Bose is such a great system then why is it always broken? :cry
Dwight,
The '86 is nothing like Ben's '91 in that it isn't two pieces. I'm assuming that you replaced the correct relay, but where is the one you replaced located? That relay gets it's turn on voltage from the same place as the power antenna does and you said it works. The high current side of that relay comes from the 15 amp CTSY/CLK FUSE. You could check that fuse, but if it were blown you'd know it as it supplies so many things. It could be a bad ground. The main ground is G125 located in the Passenger Footwell behind the kick panel. The radio ground also goes here and the radio is working. Try pulling one of your rear speakers. The location right behind the seats makes it the easiest. They have 6 cavity connectors, only 4 are used. You want to measure from pin A (BatteryV, pink ) to pin F (Ground, black) with the radio on to see if your getting Battery volts. I've got a suspicion that you changed the wrong relay as I, like you, can't believe all 4 died at the same time. It's possible the radio has faulted and has no signal out, but I believe this unlikely too. Stay with this thread as I'd like to know what this turns out to be.
PS
I'd like to know more about you Pace Car. Drop me an e-mail.
I replaced the relay under the hood on the firewall - drivers side - right by the wiper motor. I'll try pulling one of the speakers and checking for voltage there.
Ok, no power is going to the rear amp that I checked. I used a jumper wire from the + side of the battery to the Pink speaker-amp connection, and all of the speakers came to life.
So where's the amp relay located? Did I replace the wrong one?
I replaced the Bose Relay last year. All my speakers went dead and that was the culprit. It's located just to the passenger side of the radio, it's a real PITA to get out so I just unplugged it and plugged in the new one and taped it around one of the braces behind the radio.
BTW I got mine from Mid America around $30
Dwight,
OK, this is what I thought. I figured if you really had replaced the Amp Relay, you'd have mentioned how much of a job it was to get to. As Dan said, it is to the right of the radio. Some manage to get to it from the bottom, removing the hush panel, but I find it easier to remove the dash pad and go in through the top.
This may help:
The relay you are looking for will have 4 wires, a thin Black, a thin Pink, a thick Orange and a thick Pink/Black Stripe. The part number is 14078902. Good Luck! Keep us informed.
Hey, thanks for the replies ... been out of town over the weekend. Plan to tackle this tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. I was wondering about going in from the front though. Found these insructions for removing the radio and this sounds pretty easy, but doesn't matter if I still can't reach the relay. Can you reach the relay with the radio removed?
Fixed it. You get a pretty good view of the bottom of the relay through the radio opening with the radio removed. I also removed the info/instrument switch panel above the radio which allowed the box behind to be moved back and provided a little more room to unplug the relay. It was a bit of a struggle but not that bad. Plugged in the new relay, buttoned everything back up and everything works fine. Thanks for the help. :seeya
