I'll end up welding a custom box here as well. For the meantime and tuning purposes I'm just gonna shove a filter on the end of my TB. and worry about it later. To much else going on right now.

Hey LD, if possible when you have some time, could i talk with you over the phone about the fast install? esp the wiring aspect. I'd love to pick your brain because I'm about to dive head first into what you just did in a few weeks. Thanks! Caleb
Sent you a PM on the radiator setup.

Larry,

Sorry the filter housing didnt work out for you.

The MAF is 2.868" ID so going to 3.0" will open it up a fuzz.

Unless that is a restriction, it should be fine using a tube, but I will know when we get to tuning if Air flow is being compromised by the 1985 air filter accordion, tube and filter housing combo.

Re FAST, sure, will PM you
Ah this is true. Are by chance using a K&N filter? I have a plain ol paper filter in mine right now. If and when you make up that piece up is there anyway i can pay you to make me one as well? I'll ask you bout it over the phone.

It just so happens I ordered 12" and i only need 4.810", so yes, I will make 2 and you can have the other, it will be a direct fit using the stock hose clamp and two point clamp on the other end, but I'm not sure what to have the clips clip onto, but, paint it black and no one will ever notice.

Honestly, if it does not hinder the engines ability to make max HP, I will leave it in. THe material will ship to me tomorrow and then I will get it in the hands of my brother since he runs an Okuma LB400 lathe.

So I cant promise a day that it will be finished, but after I get the tube in my hands, it might be a week or two. The material was $42.24 shipped, we can split that

Excellent! I'll be very very curious to see any difference in a filter on the end of the TB and with this setup we currently have with the MAF just removed. Somehow i get the feeling we will be surprised. Thanks for the help on the caliper paint also

Let me know if you want to put our heads together more on the tab setup to hold the air cleaner to the tube!

On my 85 with DFI Gen VII and MAP I took the dimensions off the OE MAF and used some 6061 round stock, turned it in the lathe to fit the air cleaner and stock duct then milled out some tabs for the retainer clips and a tab on the bottom for the clip on my IAT sensor relocation harness, tig welded it together then had it anodized black so it had a nice integrated appearance.

Wow that's perfect. That looks almost exactly to what you were describing Larry. The I/D of the tube looks a good bit larger than the factory MAF.

One thing i just noticed is that the air cleaner box of the eariler c4's is different then the later. Which one do you have in your car?

eguyett1985, gonna do the same thing with 6061 but I'm not sure what the plan will be for the Clip end. I will probably make a pair of tabs and bolt them on thru the ID using Red LocTite, or I could maybe weld them on,

Right now, I'm half tempted to take the clips off and put 2-3 then slits in the filter housing opening and just use a Hose clamp.

Nice! Maybe its the angle but the side walls look really thick! You said the inner diameter is 3 inches? I'm guessing thats what your brother will be milling down so it will fit the factory air box right?

OD is 3.25", ID is 3.0",, so really he will only take @ .100" off the OD back @ 5/8" from each end.

Thanks guys, metalworking is awesome, I love my trade, although my brother turned these for me, I have been in the industry for 35 years myself, right out of high school

I will probably have mine anodized at some point

One is for me and the other for Dr. Huxtable

Man Larry thats looks awesome!! very very cool. Your trade is one that i would kill to know how to do, comes in very handy with having these cars! I have a feeling that this is going to work out just as good as a filter on the end of the TB in terms of air flow. I think i might get a K&N filter to help out alittle.

Actually, the ID of the 6061 Aum-tube is 3.0" and the ID of the MAF Sensor is 2.864" plus you have the metal round wire holder part which becomes and obstruction in the MAF sensor part itself taking up volume in the tube, so emphatically yes, this will flow more air than the stock MAF.

I like the polish look, so I will probably polish it or paint it the color of the intake and then put hi temp clear on it.
