Default Tuning Advice

I am looking for some advice on tuning my 94. I have had the following mods done and im not sure what (if any) tuning needs to be done to my computer to get the best performance out of her:

Year: 1994
Transmission: 4L60E
Rear Axle: 3.73
Intake: Stock
Heads: LT4 heads
Headers: Hooker c.c. headers
Exhaust: Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers
Other Mods: 52mm T.B., HPPIII
Holly Track Flow w/open lid
IAT relocated
Crane Gold Race Rockers 1.5 ratio

Engine Rebuild: January 2010

Thanks for any help you can give

Hey Ron! I hope the new year has been good to you thus far With the up grade of throttle body, cylinder heads, and long tube headers you need to tune you ECU to get the benefit of your mods.

It's good hearing from ya. I had a great year so far, hope yours is going well. I have been getting conflicting advice on the tuning - some say the mods dont warrant any changes and others say they do, I believe it does but you know I have no experience in this area and I dont really know who in clarksville to take it to

There's a shop on the other side of Nashville (in Smyrna) named "Performance Garage". Give them call. I took my car there a few years back to have it dyno'd. They do dyno tuning as well. They could not tune my car at that time because my ECU was too out dated. They should be able to do your car's The ECU in your car is way advance and more compatible to the today's tuning programs than my ECU was.

You will need a tune to fix your speedometer error and a tune will provide a minor HP increase but your car is a maf car and will be able to adjust for the better flowing heads. If you buy tunercat and a cable you could make the changes yourself.

MAF=mass air flow sensor as opposed to MAP sensor

3.73 gears which are different from stock will cause your speedometer to read incorrectly, the easiest way to fix the error is through the tune.

Ron...you car is not a MAF. Mass Air Flow cars are from 1985 to 90. Your car is a Speed Density system which are from 1991 to 96. You should be able adjust your Speedo through tuning.

I am getting ready to send my instrument cluster in to be repaired, the digital readout stopped working, once I get that done I am going to take it to Smyrna and have them tune it. that should finish up all the work I have had done to it to get it right, it is running better than ever.

Thanks for that bit of info, I didnt realize the 3.73 gears were not stock, (im not a mechanic by any means), how do these gears effect the performance?

This is incorrect, 1990 through 1993 are SD (speed density) 1994 through 1996 are MAF cars. The 1994 and 1995 are OBD1 cars and can be tuned easily and cheaply with tunercat or similar hardware. The 1996 cars are OBD2 and are more expensive to tune.

They will allow the car to get into the power band sooner and have more total RWTQ (Rear wheel torque) for improved acceleration at the expense of some gas mileage.

and also at the expense of top speed. But if it is mainly a DD then the improved seat of the pants feel is worth it!!!
