An 89 corvette that I am working for a a no start issue has a weird key code. The car cranks but will not start, so I wanted to try a VATS bypass. It will fire (once) then the VATS will kick in, but the car still cranks.
The car has a key that is reading 736 or 737 Ohms. I thought that would be a CODE 3 according to the chart below.
I ordered a CODE 3 bypass and now the car will not crank. The bypass reads 678 ohms. Tried multiple times with 5 to 15 min breaks. When I took the bypass out of the car and reconnected it would crank again. Then I put the bypass back in and no crank. I am now sure it is not a code 3. What your thoughts on how the key reads just outside of code three range, but code three bypass shut it completely down.
Do you think it should be code 4? Thoughts Can the VATS crank, but no fuel or spark?
The VATS bypass is probably bad. I had to return the first one I got. I dont really think you have a VATS problem. They dont usually crank at all when the VATS acts up.
I see you point on the no crank and no fuel, but I still don't understand why the 678 code 3 would not work when I have a 736 ohm key? Can you help explain why the code three bypass is enabling the VATS?
736 is outside the code 3 range, though close enough I would have guessed code 3 too.
So, either it's actually a code 4 or the key is completely messed up and no real clue to the actual target resistance. Do you have another key you can check?
With some resistors you can try all 15 codes & figure out which key/bypass to get.
You might want to try disconnecting the connector under the driver's side kick pannel to intentionally induce a VATS violation & see what happens, just to be sure VATS is working right. My '87 will crank but not start when VATS is triggered, but that is not normal.
From what I've read in your thread(s) I don't think your problem is VATS. The FSM has a crank but no start diagnostic procedure & you should start there.
