My 86 keeps blowing the CTSY fuse. I have been having this problem since I got the car. There are alot of harnesses under the dash that are hacked apart for an aftermarket alarm, radio, and some other things. I am pretty certain that the terrible wiring job they did is causing the problem. What is bothering me is I can't use my heater. I didn't think that this fuse is a part of that circuit? What I would like to do is take the harnesses out of a car that is being parted out. How hard would it be to remove the dash and replace these harnesses like that?

The CTSY fuse supplies part of the power to the HVAC controller if it's a C68 system (electronic). I'm not sure how much of the controller gets its power from the fuse. I do know that it maintains the memory so the controller remembers your settings when you turn off the ignition.
Yes this is a C68 system. That does answer part of my question though, because in my Hanes manual it does not mention that controller gets any power from the fuse. Thanks for the info.

Theoretically, you could replace the wiring harnesses, although IMHO you would be better off to track down problems circuit by circuit. But, your Haynes manual is next to useless for this, you need a Factory Service manual, red cover and year specific. Not only does this have detailed wiring diagrams, but descriptions of how each circuit works as well as troubleshooting help and drawings of the wiring as installed in the car. The dealers use and need this reference, can you do without it?
The CTSY circuit in particular extends throughout the car, you will tear your hair out without some guidance.
I had a short in my Blazer so I put a buzzer across the terminals in the fuse box for the fuse that kept blowing. When there is a short, the buzzer buzzes, then I went around the car moving wires until the buzzer stopped. The buzzer I got was from radio shack, a tiny one and I just jammed the wires into the fuse box using a blown fuse to hold them in place.

I know I could probably fix this issue by repairing each circuit individually. The problem is, their are sections of wiring completely missing and various other modifications made to the harnesses that it would be much easier for me to just replace the entire harness. I guess what I'm asking is how hard would it be to find a wiring harness that would work with my car, and up to what year could I use one from?
Thanks alot for that diagram Agent, that should really help.

Just a few examples of what I'm dealing with...
Aftermarket alarm under driver side dash.
Corvette radar detector? Anyways, I hope this will help you guys understand what I'm dealing with here.
Price a harness. You'll give up that idea right away.
I would NEVER buy a harness sight unseen. I've been burned several times with used electrical stuff that was just hacked to get it out of the car. Prime example: front ABS sensors with the wires cut instead of including the connector. I guess it's too much trouble to actually disassemble the parts.

Get a FSM so you can see what systems are powered by the CTSY fuse. There are a bunch of them. Hacked dash wiring is definitely a start but your still going blind. Getting new dash harnesses are a great solution. It would be time consuming but probly faster than troubleshooting yours.

My plan was to find someone who is parting out a car and specifically ask them to do it that way.

Thats exactly how I see it. I was wanting to just rip out all that junk it the pics i posted and replace it with a harness that isn't nearly as bad. I feel confident enough to fix minor things like a few cut wires, but when a harness is completely torn apart like in my pics, I just don't know where to begin with it.
