I'm not even done and the price so far is $3,223.91 for the engine build. I've gone through most of my receipts. I probably missed a few miscellaneous items. I know some of you were curious as to how much this junk costs. :) This includes everything. Machine work, parts, gaskets, fluids, seals, blah blah blah...
Now... had i bought the superram setup brand new, add another $800 to the price. Had I bought the cam brand new, add another $120.
Yeah, you would be suprised how quick all those little last minute auto parts store trips add up. When I installed the 383 in the 90 I thought I had everything covered. $800 or so later, spread out over 20 trips to the store.....you know the drill.... :smash:
And if you hadn't done most of the work yourself..........add another $1500!
$1500....? Do you know how many hours I've spent on this thing? Much more than 23 hours if you go by $65/hour. :)
I'm sure about that! :D If only I had the time and a place to do it. I seem to cause more problems than I fix when I do stuff myself though :jester and I don't have a tool truck sitting in my driveway! If all goes as planned we should be picking ours up Aug 9th from Chris at Speed Demon!
wow....um....dumb question....but can't you buy a new motor ready to go in for that price? or am i dreaming?
Shut up! :D ;) You can, but I'm not the kind of person who can hold onto that kinda $$ for that long to save up. Plus I'd end up replacing most of the parts anyways. You can get a ZZ4 for around $3500 I believe, but I would of had to still change the cam, intake, heads, etc.....
thats what I thought....your doing a hell of a job scorp.....Just wanted to check on the price....my L-98 is still running premo...(knock on wood bigtime!!!) but when the time comes..thats the road Iam doing.....save up the money into a special....when the motor finally goes fund....
Oh yeah does it add up - most people never want to know what all those pieces and parts add up to. I've kept big piles of reciepts just in case I ever have to return anything, or to remember what exactly is in there...but it is scary when you do add it up. Once, a while back, I added up The Green Rockets reciepts including car purchase (which was a healthy discount from list) cha-ching, when it went over $50k I stopped counting. The 406 that I put together for my old El Camino two years ago added up to ~ $8,000, and the supercharged 468 under currently under construction is now past $10,000.
What can I say, it is a hobby that I enjoy very much.
I'd say that for the parts you've installed you are still ahead of the game.
Yes, I do think I've done well comparitively. The tranny was $450 (basically stole it), the clutch was $350 complete, then another $40 for clutch fork and pilot bearing.
And I am only doing the top end rebuild, cat back and some minor stuff. I am not even installing many speed parts (ie. cam or SuperRAM). Had to buy a buch of tools though. Everything is just very expensive here and when I order something from US the shipping is killing me ($300 for the cat back and $77 for the RR's for example). Oh yeah I ordered a rear wheel bearing from Zip it was $141 for the part and they decided to ship it UPS Express - $143 for the shipping :mad :mad
I must do most myself with a friend - I just can't affort to get it done by a shop. But i am getting there also :D
