Changing Transmission Fluid - Easy or Hard?
I have a 94 (everything stock and normal driving) and am thinking about changing the transmission fluid in my garage.
Is this relatively straightforward or does it make sense to take it down to a mechanic?
I do most of the work on all my cars unless I do not have time or just cannot do it. I have been using the same mechanic for over 20 years. He also has owned two Corvettes and has a excellent reputation with vettes.
Every time I look at the starting this job, I wish I had a lift!
Anyway, bottom line: Is it an easy job?... or smarter to take to a good mechanic that I trust?
With respect to fluid: I look at several threads and will use the AMSOIL Synchomesh 5w-30.

Gosh, do I feel dumb. I forgot to say it is a manual transmission!
I wrote this before my first cup of coffee......sorry about that.
I have since had two cups.....ready to go!
so, now.....moving forward,..... 6 speed manual transmission.

A lift would be nice, but its not mandatory.
Pete posted a really good thread on how he did his.
Details here: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c4-g...il-change.html
And the Amsoil fluid your are wanting to use is an excellent choice.
Dropping you a PM with an offer for the AMSOIL Preferred Customer Program so you can get the AMSOIL Synthetic Synchromesh Transmission Fluid (MTF) (Product Code MTFQT) at dealer cost, about 25% below retail.

Pretty straight forward job, not hard at all. a few things to keep in mind: Jack up the entire car level. Clean both the fill/drain plugs with brake clean, this helps to prevent tool slipping, and remove the fill plug first. You can reinstall the trans oil with a piece of tygon tubing and a small funnel routed down through the engine compartment, this eliminates the need for pumping the new oil.
When the oil starts draining out through the fill plug opening during the filling procedure, the trans is full...Just like Pete showed in his presentation you should be adding a little over two Quarts.

you need the right allen key, i believe its 16 or 17mm. a fat boy. and my plugs were very hard to break free, i took a box wrench on the end of the tool to break it free. but yes, very easy process. and heres to another vote for the amsoil!
Rather than a pump to put the fluid in the tranny, just run a clear hose from the fill hole up to the engine bay and add fluid slowly through a funnel. More precise and much less likely to have fluid overflowing.
I purchased a 6 foot length of clear vinyl tubing at Home Depot. I routed the hose from the passenger's side and into the fill hole. Used a funnel and poured fluid into the hose which flowed into the trans. Kept the hose end raised high to let gravity pull the fluid into the trans. When tans overflowed....removed hose and installed fill plug.
BE SURE TO GET THE PROPER SIZE HEX SOCKET FOR THE PLUGS. You do not want to round those out. And get the fill plug off first, BEFORE the drain plug.

I still recommend a pump like harbor freight 66418... It's fast, you can fill while under looking at the fill plug. You have very good flow control with the hand pump.. you can see the amount used from the trans fluid bottle... Sitting up with the pump above
I went ahead and ordered the pump when I order the AMSOIL a few days ago. It already arrived.
My '94 is Admiral Blue which I assume is the same as yours?
